The Marietta City Schools Board of Education approved the removal of 23 books with “sexually explicit” content from its high school library on Tuesday and gave parents 30 days to submit any appeals to the list.
Superintendent Grant Rivera said media specialists and a team of district officials reviewed lists of commonly challenged books and thematic data to identify more than 700 books that may have contained sexually explicit content. From there, the group narrowed the list to 23 to remove. Rivera told the board on Tuesday he had “no hesitation” about the 23 books he brought forth for removal.

Book bans in classrooms and school libraries have impacted 1,145 unique titles in the past nine months, a new report found, as controversial literature about race, gender and sexuality has become a focal point of America's culture wars.
The report from PEN America, a literary and free expression organization, described a dramatic escalation in school book bans — defined actions that lead to removing, restricting, or diminishing access to books, based on objections to their content — after previously seeing only a handful of such cases each year.
The top three banned titles focus on LGBTQ+ individuals or touch on same-sex relationships. Here's a closer look at the titles banned most often recently by school districts:

From picture books being read at bedtime to novels being read by flashlight under blankets, kids flourish in the safety of stories as they develop their belief systems. Resilience, empathy, respect, and many other noble traits are portrayed and experienced vicariously through books. What a powerful tool!
Having been a part of the children’s book publishing industry for several decades, and as a passionate participant, I have watched in growing dismay as the children’s literature, or “kidlit,” world has shifted and changed, and most recently taken a drastic plummet. Parents need to understand the destructive path this industry has taken, or they will discover too late as the damage hits home.

President Joe Biden is unlawfully wielding his power to stop parental efforts to remove sexually explicit books from public school libraries.
Executive authority, President Joe Biden is wielding the power of his Department of Education to stop parental efforts to remove sexually explicit books from public school libraries.
It’s his latest in a string of moves meant to bully parents and other concerned citizens into silence when it comes to what kids learn in public schools and, in this case, when they should be exposed to sexually explicit material. But the notion that the federal government has any authority to veto a school district’s decision to protect students from pornographic content belongs in the library’s fantasy section.
